Handy HintsSlugs eating your Potted PlantsVaseline is the answer - put a ring of Vaseline below the rim of the pot (on the outside) and your plants will be safe. But don't forget the Vaseline is there when you go to pick up the pot! Staking and Tying back small Trees and Shrubs Why? Always avoid tying back when you can - it reduces the natural swaying of the plant thus you get less healthy plants. Cutting back in the right way will reduce the mass allowing the plants to grow more happily. In the case of small trees make sure the stake is at an angle of 45-90 degrees. Best thing to use for tying plants? Any thing that can cut into or inhibit growth is a 'no no'. Try not to use wire or nylon string. Use a proper adjustable tree tie, or... old nylon stockings (a favourite of mine); they are very strong and have a lot of give in them so the plants can move. Oil! Oil up your tools - they will love you for it. It prolongs their life, keeps them sharp and keeps the rust away. WD-40 does the job. |
