Nature-friendly GardeningWhere are the butterflies? The simple answer is were killing them off, together with loads of other beautiful insects, birds and other animals. As Britain's countryside and city spaces change and develop, as our climate changes, and as we continue to introduce non-native plants and use herbicides, we are seeing a gradual decline in some native species. As a rule, the more native plants you have the more wildlife you will attract. A patch of stinging nettles will provide food and shelter to some. A Budlia or two will feed butterflies and bees. A log pile is good for beetles ansd big old lumps of rotting wood are good for stag beetles. You really can make a difference and if you get the balance right then your garden will thrive. The best pest control or weed killer you can buy is natures own! |
